Legg-Perthes – that’s what they call it. Or, sometimes they call it Legg-Calve-Perthes Disease. Whatever you call it, it’s a real pain in the leg – literally. A childhood affliction that can cause the ball of your hip to stop growing, Legg-Perthes has a tendency to lead to issues later in life. In my case, those issues began in August of 2018 not long after I turned 36. The pain kept coming and it didn’t stop – hip arthritis, stemming from the deformed ball and the more rapid deterioration of the cartilage in the socket. There’s no doubt that Dr. Ralph Coonrad had a lot to do with the inevitable holding off as long as it did. Earlier than originally scheduled, on Wednesday, May 22nd I’ll go under the knife for a total replacement of my left hip. To say I’m excited is an understatement. No, I’m not looking forward to missing work or actually having surgery. I am, however, looking forward to getting back to a new normal – being able to do my job better than before; actually being able to go on walks that don’t include unwanted pain; getting my leg in the truck without grimacing; and, being able to play more with my kids.
Just as I was fortunate to have Dr. Coonrad come into my life at Lenox Baker, I am also fortunate to have met the doctor that will perform my surgery – Dr. David Howe. A mutual friend and a passion for wild turkey and white-tailed deer brought us together. For that, I am thankful beyond measure. For any readers, thank you for any prayers you might throw our way. I hope to be back and more capable than ever by August.
